DISCLAIMER FOR AI TOOLS
Below you can find a short list of AI powered tools. While some are understandably skeptical—or outright opposed—to the use of AI chatbots, a growing number of people have also found a great deal of support in the use of these up-and-coming tools. In an ideal world, everyone has access to proper mental health care and a strong support network. But unfortunately, many don’t. While this should not—and cannot—replace the role of a therapist, this kind of software can create a safe space for those struggling to discuss their challenges and be met with empathy, as well as talk through situations and symptoms in length that provides relief and a greater sense of understanding. However, it’s pertinent to be aware of the drawbacks of using AI chatbots for mental health, because they do come with very real risks. In general, people with more acute or high-risk symptoms (active suicidality, severe psychosis, intense emotional dysregulation) are at higher risk, as opposed to those using chatbots for milder stress, general coping, or psychoeducation. Here is a limited list of how the use of AI chatbots may exacerbate certain disorders:
- Severe Depression or Suicidality – AI may fail to recognize the severity of suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges, which could delay life-saving interventions.
- Psychotic Disorders (e.g., Schizophrenia) – Chatbot responses might unintentionally reinforce delusions or hallucinations.
- Severe Anxiety or OCD – Overreliance on chatbots can feed reassurance-seeking cycles and compulsions.
Below, you can find links to various articles exploring the dangers of relying on AI chatbots, published by different sources. Please do your own research and proceed with caution.
